what  flavor?  I need  easy  I do not need it as a  lifestyle!
what speed system can I get by  with??!?

Some  quick instructions, assuming you’ve got a decent Linux or Mac  
environment:

1. get the main package (about 10 MB)

Go to https://github.com/simh/simh
and click on “Download ZIP” (button to the upper  right)

or

wget  https://github.com/simh/simh/archive/master.zip -O  master.zip

2. unpack it 

(assuming you’re at your “home” directory)
(e.g. /home/sieler, or /Users/sieler)

unzip master.zip
(If I have to tell you to move it from wherever you  downloaded
it to here, stop now  :)

that creates simh-master with about 900 files  under it.

3 mv simh-master simh

(let’s save some typing)

4. cd  simh

5. make hp3000

That  should create simh/BIN/hp3000.  
This step takes  about 10 seconds on my Mac.

6. in a web browser, go to  http://www.bitsavers.org/bits/HP/HP_3000

Download the two files there: 32002-11018_Rev-2548.zip
and mpe-vr-software-kit.zip (about 10 MB, total)

I put the files in simh/HP3000 … they could go in a folder  (directory)
elsewhere, if you desire.  I’m  assuming simh/HP3000

7. unpack the two newly downloaded  zip files:

(assuming you’re in  simh/HP3000)

unzip  32002-11018_Rev-2548.zip
unzip  mpe-vr-software-kit.zip 

8. run  MPE!

../BIN/hp3000  mpe-auto


9. read simh/HP3000/readme.txt and  simh/HP3000/hp3000_release.txt

RTFM is always a  good idea :)

The readme came from the mpe-vr*.zip  file, the *release*txt file
came from the initial simh  zip file.


The bootup of MPE takes a few seconds!

To  terminate: hit control-E and then say “quit”.
