I have to use the hated 'vi' because PINE uses that on the network
computers of our
institute.

My favorites
1) Personal Editor II
2) Built in edit(...) statements of Turbo then PDC Prolog?
3) HPEDIT
I have written based on it a portable program: PROLEDIT. 70 K. It was
very useful when earlier versions of DOS did not include full screen EDIT
program and I had to go out regularly to alien PC-s to install updates of
our system.

1) Personal Editor
Some advantages:
The edited files are not subordinated like in HPEDIT where I have to step
over the chain of eited files to edit another one.
Good macro language, with easy understood commands like "[begin line]".
Three! kinds of blocks: line-to-line, paragraph, rectangular.
File ".unnamed" for undoing the last max 10 changes.
...

3) Advantages Prolog Editors:
Help files: standard English built-in and
programable. Easy search and replace for strings containing newlines and
tabs because the command is "[F4]old[F4]new[F4]" where 'old' and 'new1 may
contain newlines.

I have some Personal Editor II key definitons like for HP PASCAL:
Example:
Ctrl-I inserts
IF THEN BEGIN

END
ELSE BEGIN

END
then the cursor jumps insert mode after the first space after the 'IF'.
Is there anybody interested in it among the list readers?
Is there anybody having similar in HPEDIT?

                                Regards

                                                       Frank

You need three virtues in the life:
1. strength - to change the things which are changeable,
2. patience - to endure the things which are unchangeable,
3. wisdom - to distinguish the above two kinds of things.
