I don't think ftp is supposed to know/handle things like that. There was
a thread on this (~1 year ago iirc), you can check the archives. We do
this regularly (every 30 min) by first converting the text files with a
program (QD c-source avaliable on request, customized for our needs:
roman8 to ANSI, swedish chars etc.).
Performance of such a program may vary, of course, especially if your
files are *huge* (this program timed less than 2 sec for 13000+ lines of
80 bytes in heavy production).
