Gentle Listers,

I hope that all of you who celebrate American Thanksgiving had a safe and
enjoyable holiday. We sure did here in Texas. I specified _American_
Thanksgiving, to differentiate it from its Canadian equivalent. By the way,
I am sure that you are aware that Thanksgiving was first a Canadian
tradition. After all they do celebrate it earlier than we do, in early
October as opposed to late November :->.

I have pored over the survey results from Interex and I have received a
number of private messages regarding the lack of IMAGE/SQL synchrony support
from the various DB tool vendors and also regarding the inability to attach a
detail dataset to Microsoft Access. A lot of it was more in surprise than in
dismay, which leads me to ask the following questions.

Before I do however, let me just say I consider this audience to be made up
of _power users_. By this I mean to say that if anything new, groundbreaking
or innovative is happening on the HP3000, one is likely to find the
perpetrator of this endeavor at least lurking on the conversation here.
Therefore I consider that if a trend is developing in the HP3000 community,
it would be reflected here strongly.

OK, question 1. How many of you out there are actively using IMAGE/SQL WITH
SQL access? Not just to say "We have updated to IMAGE/SQL," but rather, "we
have attached production databases and we are accessing the data in IMAGE
through the SQL interface". It doesn t have to be totally SQL, but a least
some portion of it, perhaps ad-hoc reporting, should be in SQL.

Question 2. How many of you are actively accessing attached IMAGE/SQL data
via ODBC or other middleware in a client/server fashion to PCs? How are you
doing it? Which end-user tools (shrink-wrapped or otherwise) are you using?
Are you developing with VB or perhaps something else?

Question 3. If you are not now currently using IMAGE/SQL with SQL, why not?

Question 4. If you are using attached IMAGE/SQL databases with SQL but are
not doing client/server access, why not?

See, there is something for everyone in these questions. Now, let us not
waste time arguing what qualifies as client/server or trying to define it or
anything like that, let s just get some feedback going here.

You can respond to me directly at [log in to unmask] or to the list. I will
publish the results, in anonymous fashion if so requested, and I think we are
going to have some surprises.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .
