Hello Folks @ 3000-l,

Re: nscontrol question

--------------------------------------------------------Donna writes--
hi all! in our udc to start the network, there are the following
lines....

NSCONTROL SERVER=NFT,10
NSCONTROL SERVER=LOOPBACK,10
NSCONTROL SERVER=DSSERVER,10
NSCONTROL SERVER=NSSTATUS,1
NSCONTROL SERVER=VTSERVER,80,500

is this *really* helping? ...considering it's on a 995/300 (soon to
be a 997/400 (hehehehe))? - d
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The feature of being able to specify the MAXIMUM number of servers
running can be used as a tool to limit the number of servers and thus
the performance impact of a large number of active servers... very
similar to the MPE :limit command... the system runs really fast for
one user when you specify :limit 1,1. The more users allowed on the
system the greater the sharing of resources and when sharing it would
be typical for performance to be lower than if you were working in a
dedicated environment. Nothing you did not already know!

One nice feature of the server= limit feature of the NSCONTROL command
is it can avoid problems in the case of a "Denial of Service" attack.
If you specify a maximum number 10% greater than the expected number
of VTSERVER (as an example) and someone attempts to hang/crash your
system by opening multiple connections to the VTSERVER port, the limit
will restrict the attack.

The server= limit is also useful if your "users" use the feature of
starting multiple windows on their PC client and as a result start
multiple servers on the 3000. By specifying a limit you are in a way
able to police the performance impact of this utilization of the 3000.

I hope this helps.
