If you use a DLTIII cartridge, it records in the DLTIII format, which will
slow down your transfer rate. BTW, the same DLT-IV media are used in the
DLT-7000 and DLT-8000 drives, which record up to twice as much data per
cartridge. If you have an application that can use that extra capacity,
your cost-per-megabyte for media goes down accordingly.

Subject: Re: Lan backup - DDS vs. DLT

Sorry I took so long to answer, I am travelling this week. The DDS 4 is
not supported on the HP 3000 AFAIK, and it requires a FW Differential SCSI
connection.

You are comparing the DDS-4 with a DLT4000. The latter is definitely
supported on the 3000, but the technology is circa 1994. It does use a
DLT-IV tape, but you could also use DLTIII (20GB @ $28) or DLTIIIXT (30GB @
$35), if media cost is an issue. BTW, you can buy DLT IV cartridges all
day long for about $65. Visit www.dirtcheapdrives.com

I do not think you would go wrong buying the DLT4000.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

Subject: OT: Lan backup - DDS vs. DLT

I need to upgrade my Lan backup facility. Currently, I backup roughly 14GB,
this should grow to around 30GB by the end of the year.

I am looking at HP DDS and DLT drives in the Global catalog.

The HP DDS-4 drive (external) costs $1400, capacity is 40GB, transfer rate
is said to be 10.8GB/hour.

The HP DLT-4 drive (external) costs $2100, capacity is 40GB, transfer rate
is said to be 10.8GB/hour.

DDS-4 tapes cost $40/ea in single quantities, DLT IV data cartridges cost
$90/ea in single quantities.

The cost differences between DDS and DLT are pretty significant, so I am
wondering if there is some advantage to choosing DLT which would justify
the cost increase. Anyone out there with experience in this area (like
Denys?)
