On 16 March on the HP3000 List Server Terry Simpkins announced the
availability of a site at 198.190.228.6 exclusively for the game of
Empire on an HP3000 Series 922. If you can get a LCS-922: prompt, just
enter:

HELLO [8 char name],PLAYER.EMPIRE

The log on is NOT case sensitive but your 8 character name can only be
Alphabetic and Numbers and must start with an Alphabetic. (No dashes or
underscores, etc.) You'll be assigned a name, island number and password,
don't forget them.

Once you're logged in you can get help by typing HELP.

The game can handle 255 players and has a grid of 499 x 499.

I've tested this Empire game site via the Internet on my private Internet
Service Provider. I can log onto the machine and the game works. However
you can only get to it if your terminal emulator can handle VT-MGR
protocol. For those on HP-UX I haven't tried VT3K or FREEVT3K, but you
can give it a try. TELNET is not yet working properly on this computer
until the operating system is upgraded, which I should have done by next
week.

For those how haven't heard of Empire, the following is a cut and paste
from one of the HELP pages:

Empire was first developed on an HP2000C computer in BASIC at
the evergreen state college in Olympia Washington in 1973.
The original version was played and modified for a decade before
being lost. That original version was written by Ben Norton
with lots of help from Peter Langston. Other major contributions
were made by Mike Rainwater, Chas Douglass, Greg Starling and
Eric Robinson.

This version of Empire was starting in 1982 as a personal project
of Ben Norton, with contributions by Steve Sagi, Russ Glaeser,
Randy Groves, Steve Winter, Robert Imel and Eric Robinson.

Empire 2.0 was the first public release (Detroit 1986).
Empire 2.5 is the second release (Orlando 1988).
