In our October issue we reported that Dave Snow of CSY Product
Planning said at HP World that HP won't be using the L-Class
technology because it expects to have lower-frequency N-Class systems
to fill the L-Class pricing space.
I want to see how competitive these e3000 N-Class systems will be,
price-wise, once they and the HP 9000 L-3000 are both on the market.
The L-Class has limitations on extendibility, from what I recall Dave
Snow saying at HP World. On the other hand, developers who rarely
need such expansion wouldn't find these L-Class limits a hamper.
The forthcoming A-Class e3000 systems might prove a more attractive
price point for developers than either option. It will be a very
interesting year for upgrades and replacements in 2001. European 3000
customers already have a Bridge Program that gives them discounts on
N- and A-Class 3000s if they buy a 9x9 system today. I don't believe
this program is being offered in North America at this time. More
details on the Europe market in our December issue.
