We started an in-house student system in 1976 that is largely still in
use today (much has been added on, in separate databases unfortunately,
and it's ending it's life cycle). Everything was done in COBOL. In
1976, there was no VPLUS nor (I think) DEL, and even if there were, we
couldn't afford the block mode terminals.

As a result, I have some SPL code that does basic terminal I/O and field
editing. As it was optimized over the years for Series II/III's minimal
memories, it turned from source code in to largely assembly.

It is still running quite nicely as an OCTCOMP'ed system SL segment with
relevant switch stubs supplied via a local XL.
