Ok, I'll bite and add a few (combined) notes on the thread.

You might want to try entering just the comma in this case,
kind of what remains of "userpass, acctpass" when both passwords
are blank... (an empty string won't work, if I recall correctly)

A while ago, I learned that some MS clients have even stricter
limits in the area of password length... Something in the line
of 12 or 13 characters (for the "userpass, acctpass" string).

True for the (default) share level security of Samba/iX. But if you have
a chance to use an NT server (PDC?) for user validation, you might be able
to get around the encryption issue... Add "security = server" as well as
"password server = ntname" to smb.conf and SMBD should contact your NT box
for validating (NT) users and passwords. I have been told that this also
works with encrypted passwords. Just make sure that your user.map file is
well-maintained to map the NT users to MPE users (and make sure you trust
whoever maintains the passwords on the NT machine)...

A quick and dirty prototype of Samba 2.0.5/iX has been available on Jazz
for quite a while (http://jazz.external.hp.com/src/java/opensource/cvs.html
and then -> CVS Web -> Open MPE / Samba). It is tweaked just enough to get
a build on MPE/iX complete successfully and have SMBD respond to SMBCLIENT
or PC access to guest shares. It does need quite some more work. Everybody
is welcome to join and contribute in the spirit of Open Source software.
You can probably pick a lot of stuff from the 0.7c version to roll it over
to the 2.0.5/iX version (just grep for #ifdef's re MPEIX in the sources).

I have contributed a "proof of concept" as well as the "Pretty Good
Porting for MPE/iX" paper for educational purpose. Now it's your turn.

Unless you prefer to wait for HP (but I don't want to risk getting too
close to the gravity field of the recent HP Printing thread here...)

;-) ;-) Lars
