I once did a performance study for an HMO that had the same type of
problem. Had to do an on site visit to catch this one! The screens would
paint down about half way, then the hard drive would go crazy for several
seconds, then the rest of the screen would paint.
 
Check the display memory configuration, increase the number of memory
blocks till the problem goes away.
