You guys have been reading the wrong science fiction books.  Larry Niven makes
plain what will happen:  The asteroid miners, being hardy, independent pioneer
types, will set up a self-sufficient society among the asteroids.  Then they'll
form their own government, declare the asteroid belt soveriegn territory, and
threaten to drop some very big rocks on the Earth if we try to interfere.

Assuming we develop the technology (refining fuel, metals, oxygen and water from
the asteroids in suffient quantity, as well as growing food in space) to support
such a society, it really wouldn't surprise me if Niven is right.  Human nature
hasn't changed since Europe colonized the Americas, and we all know how *that*
turned out.  :-)
