HI Ed & Dave..... I'm interested!

We have the similar environment. We have HP3000, UNIX, Netware Servers,
OS/2, NT platforms. We backup all these platforms to our IBM/MVS system.
I've been wanting to switch the HP3000 product to a different vendor, but
can't because there isn't a vendor that can provide a product similar or
better than the one we have.

We use a product on the HP3K called User-Access from Network System Corp
which was bought out by StorageTek. We also have another product from the
same vendor, called User-Access CAM for the UNIX, Netware Servers, OS/2 and
NT platforms. I'm not too familiar with the CAM product. CAM uses TCP/IP
to connect to the IBM. The HP3K uses HP-IB, connected to Network Systems
hardware which is then connected FDDI to another Network System box which
is connected Bus & Tag to the IBM. We have 5 HP-IB connections. We run 2
Turbo-Store jobs over each HP-IB for a total of 10 concurrent. We can
store about 200GB of HP3K data to the IBM in about 6/7 hours. We've
thought about using TCP/IP, but we wouldn't have gained anything.

The User-Access product autmatically converts the ASCII data to EBCDIC.
Our HP3K users submit their own restores. We perform Disaster Recovery
having our HP3K in Philadelphia and the IBM in New Jersey. We use a T3
between the two sites. Same Network Systems equipment but use T3 instead
of a FDDI.

I know of other large HP3K sites that use Network System Corp products,
such Hertz Car Rental, Gillette and State Farm.

Network System Corp. feels the same way Harbor does and tried to
discontinue support of the User-Access product, but the Client sites spoke
loud enough for Network Systems to keep supporting the product. For how
much longer, is what I fear the most!

Tell Harbor we're interested and possibly the above mentioned HP3K site
too. Please keep me in the loop.

We are also in the process of building an "Enterprise" backup facility.
Since we have a mainframe (IBM/MVS/stuff) over in the corner, it's been
tagged as the repository for the backed up data from all the other servers
and designated PCs (Netware, NT, RS/6000, Win95, OS/2). We're using a
product called Harbor from InterLink (http://www.harbor.ab.ca). So far it
seems promising EXCEPT there's no client for an HP-3000! We've talked with
the Harbor folks but they don't see enough demand so won't port the code.
Now if others were interested and let them know that the 3000 is *not* a
dead box....
