After helping my son work on a project about the Wright Brothers, I gained
an appreciation for their out of the box approach. They used control lines
to various parts of the the main wing structure that actually 'warped' the
shape of the wing to adjust the shape for the changing aerodynamic
requirements during the various stages of flight. They tested the shapes
extensively with kites and actually developed a wind tunnel to test the
designs at varying wind speeds. Much of their success was attributed to
the pilot's ability to constantly adjust the warp of the wing during wind
gusts or lulls to maintain lift.

My .02.
