"I have been tasked" seems to be a synonym for "I have been [...]", where
[...] is a parameter that can be filled by the appropriate tense of one of
these verbs:

Strike, curse, afflict, plague, torment, rack, smite, excruciate, scourge,
crucify (and a few four-letter verbs that you can fill in yourselves).

Hang in there, John! (Hmmm... Is "hang" one of the verbs above?)

You bet. However, have you (or your boss) read "The Peter Principle"? :-)

Has your boss seen the Oracle gems you mention? Anne Frank said "I still
believe people are good at heart" (or words to that effect). Given enough
FACTUAL information, I still believe people can reach reasonable
conclusions. Perhaps your boss (or your boss's boss, all the way up the
hierarchy) has not had the benefit of accurate information from the
trenches (which is vastly different from glossed-over "information" from an
overhead projector or from a PowerPoint presentation or from a magazine).

Surely, our small sample of comments on HP3000-L is quite impressive but
could be biased. How about complementing it with a slightly larger sample
from the newsgroups that deal with Oracle? Could someone kindly point some
gems from such newsgroups? Or, better yet, could someone kindly provide
the names of such newsgroups? Your boss (and your boss's boss, etc.) could
then go directly to the sources and see themselves in the position of
having to deal with that stark reality BEFORE they actually jump in.

Then, on the other hand, it might be the case that these newsgroups have
nothing but glowing technical kudos for Oracle. This would be good and
would make you feel better about going with a demonstrated winner. In
fact, it would be good for all of us so we can quit saying undeservedly
nasty things about a good first-class product.

I have a VERY good friend who became a millionaire at Oracle and retired
early. So, Oracle can't be that bad, at least from his viewpoint. If your
company goes with Oracle, my friend will be most thankful because he can
then buy yet another yatch. What difference does this little contribution
to my friend's financial well-being make for your company's bottom line,
after all?

Curiously yours,
