Did you know the McKessonHBOC has a hp e3k system for the HIS (hospital
information system) side as well?
The hospital version of Amisys. It's called Precision 2000 (the old
Gerber/Alley System, AKA The Precision Alternative)?

Uses Turbo Image as the DBMS, Cognos Powerhouse for Quick for screens, Quiz
reports and QTP for processes. With a few COBOL and C applications where
needed. Windows version of Powerhouse if needed (web-enabled if you like
MiniSoft's Javelin).

We use it here....

We have moved applications from the e3k, but for each app (i.e. Pharmacy for
example), the cost has been over $250,000 (a Windows NT style subsystem for
example).

They have tried to kill the product over the past few years, but have
failed. Rumor has it that it is a very profitable product for them (and user
satisfaction is great - which is saying a lot for the healthcare industry).
The system is rock solid, and so automated that we don't have a computer
operator... well we do in name only (but don't tell HR - she now handles our
help desk, pagers and phones).

As a result of this system, our IS budget is half the industry average (and
we handle telecommunications as well).

This not a commercial plug, just trying to keep an e3k system viable.
