I ran into the same situation a year ago when I was importing data from a DG
MV4000 Cobol application.  My memory is hazy, but I vaguely remember that the
offending fields were zone packed decimal, and the } replaced the last char in
the field.  The problem is not in the data, but in the way it has been read
from the source record and translated to ASCII chars.

As a Fortran programmer, I overcame the foibles of Cobol by writing the usual
mickey mouser to clean the data, then load it into Powerhouse.
