Hello Kara Strunk & friends @ 3000-l,

Re: FTP Problem

--------------------------------------------------------------Kara Strunk says--
We've replaced one of older systems with a new 969/220 running MPE 5.5.
Since that change one of our external clients has had problems ftp'ing to the
new system. Because of this problem, they are continuing to transfer files to
the old system which we then have to transfer to the new system.
At first I assumed is was a firewall or login problem, but the client sent me
a screen shot of what is happening. She is getting logged in fine, but when she
executes any commands, such as "dir", she gets the following error message:
"No data transferred Foreign host did not respond within OPEN timeout.
(8560)."
I've tried to duplicate the problem with other machines we have here, but it
works fine for me.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciate. We really want to
remove the old system, but can't until this problem is resolved.

Well, the error message from the client does not help much here and it is
disappointing that this client did not follow standards and generate a Xnn error
message where X = a number from 1xx to 5xx. I checked HP's solution database
and we have never see a 8560 FTP error message from a non-hp client.

Anyway, where to start... I would suggest you probably are running Unpatched
FTP on 5.5 and I would suggest you contact your friends at the Response Center
and pickup patch FTPFD57 5.5 GENERAL RELEASE and install it (can be installed
with the system up) and then work with your user to again attempt to duplicate
the problem... Better yet, if you have the time is to get the Power patch and
install it with all the current General Release patches.

Next step would be to add a "debug" command into the client (if it will take
one) and see if it will further identify the failing command.

After this you are into tracing the command and data connections to determine
what is going on...

  I hope this helps.
