HP keeps telling us they need a business case to do anything on the HP3000.
As this does not seem to be a problem to do things on the HP-UX platform, I
sometimes question HP's true feelings with regards to the longevity of the
HP3000. Then I look at what they have done on IMAGE, ALLBASE, POSIX and I
find myself being ambivalent. Why can't this enthusiasm be found across the
board when it comes to languages.

C++ has been desired on the HP3000 for a number of years, but...

Your message, Chris, warms my heart. Here is a definite business case for
HP. And as soon as I figure out what a stregic product is, we could be in
business. At SIGIMAGE, Denny Allain, chair of SIGUNIX, took his courage in
both hands and the microphone in the other and asked HP for IMAGE/UX. He has
customers who want to migrate from HP1000 IMAGE to HP-UX (with no IMAGE but
there is ADABAS, go figure!). He was told to contact Denkart, which he
immediately did, only to be told that they could not sell anything as HP had
not given permission. Denny retook the mike and explained this. No response
was forthcoming from HP. In all fairness, HP was taken by surprise and no
one expected them to say anything. But slowly, surely the cases for C++ and
IMAGE/UX are building. I am sure that HP is paying attention, we just have
not reached critical mass yet. (My guess is we are still a long way from
this point but I am in for the long run.)

Kind regards,

Denys. . .
