We know this is probably getting a little deeper than we wanted to, but is
there a way to perhaps query the printer to find out what type it is? Would
it be possible to perhaps write one section for laser printers and one
section for impact printers?

Unfortunately, you can't be printer-neutral. A printer using, say, PCL5,
requires a specific set of escape sequences to turn on the correct bar-code
font, and another specific set of escape sequences to turn on human-readable
fonts when you are through printing the bar codes. If the printer is a
thermal printer or an impact printer, it probably doesn't use PCL5, and a
different set of escape sequences are required.

If you know that the printers will always be one kind of printer, you can
write one program to drive the printers.
