Again shootin' from the hip....

Could the tape drive used have been a 7980XC and
the "COMPRESS" keyword have enabled hardware compression?
In which a non-7980XC drive couldn't read?

We had a tape at work once that wouldn't read.
But on my 7980XC, it would.

[using FCOPY ;char;hex for the first 3-4 records may be helpful]
