Try finding the local newspaper(s)'s web site and see if it includes
classified ads. Try an apartment locating service to see if they can
put you onto a duplex.

Once you have a location that seems interesting, this site will tell
all sorts of information including crime statistics:

If broadband internet connectivity is important, www.dslreports.com
