Dave,

I think we have all been down this road, although it has been awhile since I have last played with a Mod20... here are some thoughts.

The disc drives in a Mod 20 contain a 'flair code', which is populated on 4 of the drives.

The problem your going to run into is that the Mod20 only recognizes certain SCSI device types (names).  You can try and put the 1TB drive in, but I doubt the Mod20 will recognize it... in fact I have tried with a smaller drive, and it gave me a message along the lines of "the drive is not valid".

Another problem, is the Mod20 will only recognize up to 36GB drives??? at least that is the last time I checked.

Now there are two types of HVD drives available for the Mod20... HP branded drives and the cheaper Clarion drives... at this point, the reason these older, used drives are more expensive is simple supply and demand.

One experiment I tried was to use all non-HP drives (IIRC I used Seagate 18gb drives), while the system let me bind and run for awhile, when the first drive failed, I would not accept an Seagate replacement drive.

It would be nice if someone knows how to over-write the SCSI ID on a physical drive... if it is possible, I would be willing to test the configuration.  :-)

Another little side note, the SP620 controllers use 4 16mb FPM (Fast page mode) memory sticks.   I have confirmed that they can be replaced with 32mb FPM memory.  The system will see 128mb of memory and utilize it.

HTH,

Happy New Year,

-Craig

Hello all and Happy New Year to all!!!

I've run into a situation where I had a internal disc drive on my 987 that took
a hike on me and what I did was configured the system to look at a disk
module on my MOD 20 that is 9 gb.

When I talked to my hardware vendor about just replacing the disc drive inside
of the module instead of buying a whole module for $$$, they told me well its
just cheaper to buy the whole disc module to the MOD 20.

What I wanted to do is run down to Best Buy, pick up a 100gb drive, soldier it
in, and be done with it.

I saw some disc modules for 35gb at $750.

Thats insane!

I picked up a Western Digital 1TB drive from geeks.com for less then $100 for
my home system.

Is there anybody out here that was able to replace the disc without spending
a ton of money?

tia
