Jim Trudeau shares some items as to why the 3000 is not viable... let me
throw some water on these reasons and put these fires out:

> Problems I've run into justifying the HP3000 are:
>
> 1). You never hear anything about the HP3000. There are no
> job listings posted in the newspaper for it.

Several reasons:

- Folks in the 3000 arena are quite happy campers, work with a system that
works for them and is robust in all areas including the internet.

- A competent person with the 3000 can switch positions easily by just
networking. In addition, there are several search firms who work primarily
with the 3000.

- Many HP3000-based firms "do not advertise" because the bang for the buck,
if you will, is low. You get a lot of resumes which don't fit. Going with
a search firm, or using the "network" (such as 3000-L and other venues) can
find a much more qualified person at a better rate of "advertising buck"
return.

- Lastly, there are 3000-based positions in the paper... a lot depends on
what part of the country you are in. Here in metropolitan BSEPA, they do
appear in the Philadelphia Inquirer (the major morning daily), and the
Sunday Classifieds have a segregated "technology" section.

> 2). HP3000 reminds me "of the Honeywell system I worked on".

Really? How does GCOS remind someone of MPE? They are no sooner alike than
flying to the moon. Also, most Honeywell system models started with DPS,
not HP.

> 3). Because of the above, no one wants to learn HP. The
> future of the HP3000 is questionable.

Where the hell did this one come from? No one wants to "learn HP" -- what's
there to learn? Take a person, show them MPE, then show them OS400, and
then tell me which is easier. Take a DBA and show them Image/SQL, then DB2
and tell me which is the easier database to administer. Please...

In addition, we have an assignment where we just purchased a 10-user license
for Visual Studio Enterprise for a client and we will be training this
client's staff on the use of C/S and web-based technologies for the HP3000.
This client will be using their 3000 on the web, and on internal networks.
They want to "learn the 3000" (and not just MPE either).

Sorry - none of this washes. I had a boss once who used one of these too -
"you never see the jobs in the paper" - of course you don't! Reasons stated
above.

Joe
