If I run a program written for an earlier version of a system under a
new version then I expect that the program works. That means upward
compatibility. Yesterday I downloaded some Windows utilities from an
anonymous ftp. I tried to run them under my Windows 3.1. They messaged
that they were written for Windows 3.0, and they might cause unexpected
errors under Windows 3.1. And they did!

That means that Microsoft do not obey the expected rules of upward
compatibility. That is a dirty trick to force the users buy again some
programs for the new version that they have bought already for the older
