Because I no longer have a clue about what is current best practice
with respect to HP3000/9x8 performance, if I ever did.  The present
system

This is a marginal issue for us as the existing system gives more
than adequate performace. We simply wish, at minimum cost, to
increase the disc capacity sufficiently to hold backups on disc
until they can be moved off via the network.  The savings are all
had in the reduction of labour expense associated with tape
archives and associated records management.  The other major
benefit is automating off-site storage transmission.
