Actually, I would say that we BELIEVE that a water molecule is made from
two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, just as the Greeks believed that a
person fell in love because Eros shot an arrow at him. I have never
actually SEEN a water molecule (nor Eros for that matter). However, we can
do a lot of experiments that will confirm our belief in the water molecule
and its structure, but I don't know of any experiments that will confirm
the existence of Eros.
The huge success of the scientific method (and the existence of this e-mail
list, with all the technology behind it, is a good example) is dependent on
the experimental method and the tenet that there is no such thing as a
miracle (i.e. any anomalous result can and must be explained in scientific
terms).
