But reference modification IDENTIFIER(1:1) isn't free. If this is a batch
process, you might want to benchmark this, versus simply defining this first
byte in working storage. Or, has anyone on the list already benchmarked
this?

But IF FIRST-CHAR-IDENTIFIER IS NOT NUMERIC, or IS ALPHABETIC, depending on
what classes you want to test for or against, is a solid approach.
