I think that is a good idea. I am not sure if a a 918 will benefit from FWD
controller (20 Mbit/sec) and disks, so I suggest make your 2nd controller SE
(5 Mbit/sec). Move 1 4GB module to the other half, add 2 low profile modules
and you will have 3 disks per controller.
OR
Throw out all your SE disks, get 1 FWD controller (allows 15 devices, but
not more than 10 suggested) and only FWD disks in the HASS. I have done that
with a 928LX and 3 x 9GB HASS modules that end up as 21GB total (4GB +
2*8.5GB)

You can have 4 SE (single slot) or 2 FWD (double slot) controllers.

Not a good idea, it will make your IO problem worse.
