Yeah, that's certainly true the other way round as well. I guess very few
people here in France can tell where Gettysburg is, and why it is so famous.

In another instance, the Battle of Verdun caused about 800,000 dead. Can you
believe that ? A city the size of San Jose, CA., wiped off the earth in a
SINGLE battle ??? OK, the battle lasted about 8 months. That makes it, at
about 3,500 dead a day, an horrible butchery. I already posted here the
story of Douaumont, an outpost on the front line near Verdun which was taken
and re-taken a few times during the battle. For me, Douaumont epitomizes the
absurdity of war.

Re: the Battle of the Somme, yes, I knew the figures. They have been
recently quoted on TV here.

Our message about Veterans' Day / Nov. 11th / WW1 Memorial : Let's agree on
what we can ... Never, never again, should such a slaughter occur. Do we
have an agreement ?
