Paul,
If your 3000 is under 5.5, you can use JetDirect cards in the printers if
they accept them (ie: Laserjets). These use IP, which is routable.
If using the older, standard line printers, consider serial interfaces for
these printers. They can be connected via DTC, which is not routable and
must be bridged. The fact that the DTC protocol is bridged means that it
passes right through the firewall. If using one of the newer DTC16 or
72MX, then IP can be used here as well, and can be routed through the
firewall.
