Isn't segregating parts by class code (there are 4 class code groups to work
with) a better idea than trying to set customized part numbers? Whether it
be a part number, a sales order number or whatever unless you are simply
using unique prefixes for your own reporting purposes, I don't think it is a
good idea. Just my opinion.

My thoughts revolved around old fashioned 9s, dashes and
alpha (0/9 - A/z) screens in certain character positions
for the part number.

In MANMAN G/L, this is done for the G/L account number
after all (but only numerics and dashes.)
