Is this an internal or external dds drive?
I've seen this sort of thing often - mostly with internal dds drives.
For some reason, external drives appear to last longer - perhaps because
they are better insolated from various electrical conditions that are
associated with internal drives.
Also, external drives are much easier to replace when they do break down.
