Or, if you wished to keep this material out of your mailbox, you could sign
off of the list and just read the posts you wish to read on the newsgroup and
ignore the rest. I know I do this with sci.astro, a newsgroup that probably
has the highest ratio of "rtrue" noise to content (perhaps 500:1) of any
newsgroup out there. It's been completely taken over by kooks and crazies and
Fox News Network devotees, but people from JPL, NASA, ESA and a number of
universities still post their press announcements there as well, thus it's
still worth scanning once or twice a day.

I generally find these kinds of solutions, where I can proactively take the
lead and do whatever it is that I need to satisfy me, to be far better than
blaming everyone else for their failings. I wouldn't go so far as to say
anything is broken if there are easily available alternatives.
