Subject: FTP stall question

Hello All,

We've had some problems recently with a provider with whom we exchange files
via FTP. Our 989-650 connects to their UNIX system and puts a file in our
directory on their box, they process it, and then we have another process
that gets the results from their box a few minutes later (initiated again by
the 989-650). We're running 6.5pp2 on this machine.

However, last weekend at two different times our FTP process got "hung" on
the very same DIR command on their system and sat there for many hours.
I've attached the tail end of the job (with names and numbers changed) that
I aborted after 5 hours last Saturday night. I don't know why a timeout did
not occur, but it's clear that nothing was happening. This vendor claims
that there was absolutely nothing unusual going on at the time on their end.
Oh, "other than 'maintenance', but of course that couldn't possibly have
been the problem".

Does anyone know of anything that could have been the problem outside of
their system maintenance, and that would have not caused the process to
timeout and abort? Bad phone lines, annual FTP siesta/holiday, sunspots,
terrorist plots?

Thanks in advance,
