The system you describe is suitable for "learning", but as usual, there is
the ever present question to ask: what do you actually want to DO with the
machine?  If what you want to do is "learn Unix" [and, by extension, the
posix "shell" under MPE], then stick with a straight installation and skip
"X" for now.  If you eventually want to dump (ahem "have an alternative to")
Microsoft, then you'll need to get "X" installed and you'll want to look
into StarOffice [now distributed by SUN] or Applixware -- both of these are
complete "suites" to supplant Microsoft Office

Of course, using Linux to learn the posix "shell" would actually make this
an "on topic" discussion thread... :)
