Paul,

I can get to a management interface on most hp printers now with a web
browser. This one sports a personality option that ranges from Auto, pcl5e
and something else, but none of them make any difference. The manual does
not mention what this means that I can see. There is also a place where you
can define font numbers 0-21 in pcl5e (as to points etc), but no idea what
it means.

The specs for the 2840 indicate that it has a build in JetDirect card.  Have
you considered perhaps using JetAdmin to 'manage' the device.  Perhaps it
may offer some additional insight.
