Dan,

Welcome to the HP 3000 MPE iX community.

     Oh, my!

First, I would highly recommend that you find a way to go to the HP World 2000Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania September 9-14.

In answer to your questions, here are philosophic answers:

     1) POSIX is a state of mind completely contained within the realm of MPE iX native code. You share files, run programs, invoke scripts and commands which can share / overlap within POSIX and MPE iX. POSIX is really a specialized program / command interpreter which allows you to extend the power of MPE iX with such things as easily manipulating long UNIX like file names. In theory, you should be able to do almost anything in either the POSIX shell or MPE iX command interpreter (CI). In theory. The "look and feel" is completely different between them. Each is powerful in its own right. The two communicate.

     2) MPE iX can only run on a machine outfitted as an HP 3000. There is a variation in the firmware between the HP 3000 and the HP 9000, which has been thoroughly copyrighted and penalties for infringements are a power disincentive to making one machine into another without express cooperation from HP (not to mention some $$$$$$$$$$).

These are philosophic answers to your question which may differ from the rigorously technical answers slightly (and philosophically speaking may not be 100% accurate according to the technological point of view), though others on this forum will set us straight on the truth of the matter.

     Again, welcome, Dan!

Douglas

Hello!

Please excuse the simplicity of this question as I'm a complete MPE
novice. However, a large looming project which my company has put me
in charge of will undoubtedly make me MPE experienced in no time.

However, I need to have two things clarified, and since information on
MPE is hard to find, this forum is as good as any to start with:

1) My understanding is that there are two distinct "modes" that run on
MPE/iX - MPE native, and POSIX. If an MPE native app and POSIX are
running at the same time, can they work with each other? I've heard
that they are completely disjoint and cannot share information.

2) Can MPE/iX 6.x be installed on an HP9000, or will it only work on
an HP3000?

Thanks in advance,
Dan Behman.
