I hold your same position at NEORUG (Northeast Ohio). We are all dealing
with these same issues. The reason most folks are planning to migrate away
from MPE is that HP won't support it any longer. Pretty sound reasoning.
They think the risk is too high to plan to stay with MPE over the long haul.

Many would disagree with this, of course. It will be hard to convince
company leaders to stay on a platform whose vendor is dropping it. Over the
last 10-15 years, software vendors have developed fewer and fewer
applications that run on MPE. The trend continues.

In years past HP itself heavily promoted the RUGs. Today, they do next to
nothing.
Additionally, many IT folks now have multiple operating systems to manage.
That dilutes the interest and attention to HP, MPE, and the RUG meetings.
In the coming months, HP is sponsoring a e3000 Transition Tour. Yours
(Houston) is on Nov 14th. The agenda includes topics on "migration" and
"transition", but nothing on "homesteading." Yes, in the past it was much
different, but now HP is there to help us all get off of MPE and onto
something else, they hope HP-UX.

Recently, I have been appointed to the BOD of Greater Houston RUG, Vice
Chair of M.P.E., on a temporary basis until the next election. I would
like to have someone like 'Wirt' speak about the reasons to stay with
M.P.E. (I did read Wirt's reasoning on the AICS web-site), or maybe
someone from the OpenMPE. BOD. Also some other migration options, like
Linux, RM-COBOL or GNU COBOL, HP-Eloquence, QCTERM, using Advanced
Telnet. Additionally I would like to see the High dollar solution of
migrating from M.P.E. to HPUX, Oracle, because that seems to be what a
lot of users want to do. Heck, we may even bring in an I.B.M. solution.
I would like the M.P.E. potion of our upcoming meeting to be geared
toward both Migrating off the M.P.E. platform, and Staying on the M.P.E.
platform. For the following reasons: 1. Our mission statement is
basically to represent the Users of HP computers. 2. Some of our users
would like to stay on the M.P.E. platform, but don't see how. 3. Most
M.P.E. users seem to be in favor of Migrating off of the M.P.E.
platform. The reason for the favored choice to Migrate off M.P.E. is
because they have not been given a better option, or they have an
emotionally motivated enthusiasm to go to a different/popular platform.
I use the word "Emotionally" because I think that when you really think
this through, in most cases you'll see that staying with M.P.E. is the
best choice, at least for the next 10 years. Ten years from today many
more options will exist. It seems most of the Regional Users Groups
members have lost interest in attending RUG meetings, anyone opinions of
'Why' is most welcome. I have a theory or two myself. Is it the content
of the shows? Is it a M.P.E. problem, or HPUX, or both? Could it be
related to the separation of M.P.E. & HPUX users?What M.P.E. content
would you like to see at the next RUG meeting?What would it take to get
