Nah, we didn't have that. I suspect it's just a case of my nearly-46-year-old
neurons not firing as well as they once did...

I just tried it, just in case the capability had been added without my
realizing it, and the cntl-A does *not* work from another terminal that has
taken the console. This was by design - the designers thought it best not
to have someone be able to shut down your system remotely. Perhaps your
site had Telamon's Console Engine...

Well, it's been years since I've done it, so my memory may be faulty. But I
could have sworn that I'd done [CTRL-A] =SHUTDOWN using the :CONSOLE command
on
dial-up lines with a PC running Reflection 7. I know it wasn't the remote
console port, as we kept that connected to a support modem for HP to use and
it
was disabled unless we needed PICS to dial in. I always came in through our
modem pool as LDEV 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, or 28. Again, I could have sworn I
remembered doing the shutdown and then calling the computer room to tell the
operator whether I wanted a warmstart or coolstart since I lost access to
the
console at that point. But maybe I'm just remembering shutting down
everything
else (we had a very complicated application shutdown procedure) before
having
the operator do the actual system shutdown. As I said, it's been a long
time,
and I can't test it now, as I haven't had access to a 3000 since 1997.

This isn't exactly true. Yes, you can reboot via dial-in if you are using
remote console support, but that is essentially hooking your remote console
port (LDEV 21) in parallel with LDEV 20. Just using the CONSOLE command to
take the console won't work because you can't do a cntl-A nor a cntl-B. If
the console port is hung, rather than the terminal, you may be faced with an
ungraceful shutdown.

Since you can take the console, I would try clearing the main console with
:ABORTJOB and :ABORTIO, and even cutting the power to the console OFF and ON
again, before rebooting. That has sometimes cleared up "hung console"
problems
for me. But if necessary, then yes, you can reboot from another console.
In
fact, I've rebooted systems from home over a dial-up line. The only problem
is
that once the system starts coming back up, it will revert to the original
console, so you want to make certain you have a working terminal on that
port
when you reboot.

Hello List,

We have a locked console on our 3000 979. I issued the commands to unlock,
CTRL - S, then CTRL - Q with no results.

It is not affecting the users and I can take the console.

Has anyone rebooted the 3000 from another console? Is it possible?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance
