MICR = Magnetic Ink Character Recognition - The stuff at the bottom of your
checks is printed in a MICR font which is designed to be easily read via OCR
technology. The 'ink' or toner used to produce these characters should also
include a special iron additive to make the characters magnetically readable
as well.

Note that MICR also includes some special characters which do not exist in a
regular character set. These have to do with signaling the beginning and end
of the character string to MICR reading devices.
