Hi Doug,
two remarks come to my mind in regard to your recent 950-to-947 posting:
1. As far as I remember there was (or still is) some kind of upgrade
assistance service where some HP performance people evaluate some
info you provide and suggest a box to upgrade (or consolidate) to.
If the new box does not perform well then you get a free upgrade to
the next higher CPU model.
I think it is (or was) called "performance guarantee program" or so.
Someone at HP should be able to look it up. (Maybe it was no-charge).
2. Moving from box A to box B can be prepared with the following steps:
Use SYSGEN to prepare a config group for the new box. Use BASEGROUP
to start with a sample default config like CONF9X71 (for 9x7 with 1
internal disc drive), customize it as needed (add devices & classes,
adjust MISC or LOG or SYSFILE if needed to match your current config)
and KEEP the new box config to a separate group e.g. NEWCONF.SYS.
You can also make a copy of NMCONFIG and adjust the hardware paths
of DTSLINK and SYSLINK for the new box. Make sure to use the RDCC cmd
in SYSGEN to have your NEWCONF refer to your NEWNMCONF file instead
of NMCONFIG.PUB.SYS.
When ready to move to the new box, create an SLT for the new box on
the old box with SYSGEN using BAsegroup NEWCONF before the TAPE cmd.
This will write your NEWCONF and NEWNMCONF to the SLT as CONFIG.SYS
and NMCONFIG.PUB.SYS. Create your full backup (incl DIRECTORY and
ONVS options if User Volume Sets) as usual.
The above was on the old box A, the next happens on the new box B...
On the new box simply INSTALL from the prepared SLT, start (with the
prepared config already in place), setup volumes and/or user volume
sets in VOLUTIL and finally to the RESTORE @@@;DIRECTRY;KEEP;OLDDATE.
(Watch out for things like new HPSUSAN number and 3rd party software)
Would someone on the list please correct me if I missed or mixed up
something important in the above two points? Thanks a lot...
Cheers, Lars at-home/iX
