If they are in a private volume (not the system volume) then you don't have to
do an update. In fact you can keep the system up the whole time. Basically,
your cycle will be STORE, VOLUTIL, RESTORE. Peruse the VOLUTIL manual
thoroughly before starting :)

If you are wanting to take volumes out of the *system* volume, then yeah you
are gonna have to do a reload.
