Several of you responded in kind on this memory board problem. I did find a bad memory card, and took out the pair ! For more information, see the bottom of this e-mail.

NEW question - I purchased several newer disk drives this past Saturday and I would like to swap the system drives in my HP3000's - so I have some steps to accomplish that I would love feedback about ! Also am very unsure as to how to change the device strings in sysgen to be proper and how to boot from the new drives.

1) Make a modern SLT tape
2) Make new BULDJOB1 and BULDJOB2
3) Do a full store to tape
4) Verify full store to tape
5) Run full store to disk
6) Reflection copy disk store to PC
7) Better yet, make two SLT tapes + backup tapes !
8) Write down or screen shot old drive device string in sysgen and configuration
9) Purge data off of drives (may be hard to do for SYS account)
10) Take the machine down cold
11) Take out the old drive, noting SCSI address
12) Install newer drive
13) Boot from ALT on SLT tape
14) INSTALL from SLT tape
15) Bring up machine
16) Get into sysgen and change device string, making sure to save
17) Shutdown machine cold
18) Boot from PRI
19) START NORECOVERY
20) Format drives that are a part of MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET but not DEV=1 ????
21) Use volutil to rebuild MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET
22) Use volutil to rebuild external volume sets ???
23) Restore BULDJOB1 and BULDJOB2
24) Stream BULDJOB1 to re-create all accounts/groups/users
25) Restore everything from backup take with ;KEEP;OLDDATE options
26) Stream BULDJOB2 to set up UDC's
27) Purge off BULDJOB1 and BULDJOB2
28) Make new SLT tape
29) Do a full store to a different tape
30) Verify full store tape
31) Run full store to disk
32) Reflection copy disk store to PC

Did I forget something/anything ?

A response from below is helpful if you happen to run across this problem.

From: Keven Miller (3kG)

Grab yourself a copy of the 9X8 CE Handbook:

 http://www.3kranger.com/HP3000/mpeix/en-hard/PDF/A2051-90003.pdf

In Chapter 5 Troubleshooting, Page 5-10 it tells about the 70xx codes.
702B is memory error for memory card in slot 2, side B.

In Chapter 4 Configuration, Page 4-14/-15/... it tells and shows the slot
layout. You should then be able to identify the memory card that is failing.

You may want to just pull all and re-insert them, making sure they are
secure.
Try the boot.

Or/And swap the 2B card for one in slot 3
(assuming it qualifies with matching memory size, Rule #2).
Then see if the error reports the same card, but now in the new slot.
Which would confirm the card is not feeling well.

HP-A3131A 128mb (2x64mb cards - since you need a matching set)
is likely what you want/need. Its the largest memory cards for a 9x8.
