We're not as big and varied as you but getting there quickly. We use
Dantz Developments Retrospect product... we've gone to using hard drives
instead of tapes. I know it's goofy, but it's working. The software will
do compression so we are getting more per drive the the rated capacity.
We went to using external firewire enclosures, usb 2.0 would work also,
with a removable hard drive setup like you see used in PC's. We've
loaded the removable cages with 120GB drives, you could use the 160GB
Maxtor drives just as easily. The throughput to the hard drives has been
a lot better then tape, and the restore times are incredibly faster then
tape. The cost to put the hardware together was low also... the firewire
card was $39, the firewire enclosures are $99 each, and the removable
racks are $16 each, and the hard drives are $150 each. It's
unconventional but it's working.
