While this approach makes sense, and would work in for most local
connections, I can see a trend forming that could cause a problem for VPN
users.

@Home currently has a policy for its cable modem subscribers, the prohibits
any type of web/ftp/other server on a PC connected through the cable modem.
They frequently scan for open ports and send somewhat threatening letters to
subscribers who violate this. I have also noticed many DSL contracts
containing similar language.

This, they claim, is to prevent a few users from hogging all the available
bandwith and the argument they used when capping their upstream bandwith to
128kb. Simply installing Frontpage with Personal Web Server for web page
design got me a shut it down or be disconnected email.

This is one reason I prefer an integrated solution that I can control
through a simple security of deny/prompt/accept with the ability to save
both a general setting and site specific settings.
