Somewhat along the same lines but not quite....

Once when we had a disk drive that was failing (predictive caught
excessive read/write retries) one of our brilliant CE's (we have
two) was able to STORE the contents of this one drive to tape
(DDS). He then replaced the drive and reloaded the data from the
tape to the new drive. This saved us from having to do an
     install and reload.

Now, I believe this is only possible if it caught before the
drive goes completely bad and data is lost.

Hopefully this may help someone else.......

Subject: to spare Bad sectors

Happy new year to all.

We had a problem over the holidays - Predicta reported bad sectors on one of our
iscs. The problem has been resolved (disc drive replaced, followed by Install an
Restore @[log in to unmask]@) The system: MPE/iX 5.0 PP5, all discs are in the System volume
set.

To all you folks that have had that happen, a couple of questions -
Our CEs tell us that the RC can logon and reassign bad sectors. When our system
nager was talking to the response center this was not suggested. To be fair ther
were quite a few errors (both recovered and unrecovered) so replacement was the
st answer.

Since the system must be booted in single-user single-disc mode, can the RC stil
log on remotely? We've never had occasion to try this, before.

If sector re-assignment is attempted, and fails; do we know what files are affec
d? Is there any way to recover files in this case?

All information will be gratefully accepted.
