The success and PR IBM has with the AS/400 should give HP pause. It
could have been HP with the HP3000 if different decisions had been made
several years back. Now HP needs to invest to compete in this market and
win some decent market share. They have to overcome the perceptions that
have developed in the IT industry and media about MPE and the HP3000. At
least they still have a good product and a loyal base of users to work
from. The fish are there for the catching, but can HP use the right
bait? Last I heard, if you were a fish that wanted to be caught, you'd
have to find another fisherman to offer to catch you 'cause HP's own
direct sales force have too much distance between them and the 3000.
