Hi all,

< http://www.macintouch.com/airportantenna.html> has a user report of
some tests done with 802.11 (2.4GHz wireless) LAN connections using
directional antennas. The report indicates that distances of 15Km or more
are possible over line-of-sight paths. Tests were done with Apple's
AirPort products, but these just use Lucent PCMCIA cards so the results
are generally applicable.

Disclaimer: I'm not sure that the longest-range setup meets FCC
regulations, since I'm not sure whether the power regulations specify RF
output power or effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP). If the latter,
then some of the tests done would violate those regulations. However, the
tests for up to 4Km would still be within specifications. Also, disregard
the speculation about 360-degree 4-9Km range; it's based on some faulty
assumptions about the way antennas actually work.
