Jeff, I just wanted to say I am very pleased this important enhancement has
been done. In my mind, this enhancement was critical to the viability of
homesteading and the success of OpenMPE. A few years from now, when your
ldev 1 disk drive breaks, you will no longer be faced with the problem of
buying a 160GB disk drive (the smallest available) and only being able to
use 4GB. This also means that A-Class systems become more desirable since
you will not be able to have access to all 72GB of the 2 internal 36GB disk
drives.
Well done!
Kind regards,
Denys. . .

Subject: beyond 4GB on LDEV-1
Hi all,
Just a quick note to say that CSY R&D has completed the SIB
request to allow customers access to their disk space on
LDEV 1, beyond the first 4 GB. This enhancement will first
appear in mainline release 7.5. As of now a patch to earlier
releases is not planned due to the nature of the fix.
A communicator article should appear on Jazz shortly, but in
brief, here is how it works, but I am going from memory here
and don't have my notes:
1) by default all user space allocated on MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET
will try to avoid LDEV-1 all together.
2) if LDEV 1 is requested, or if (1) above is not possible then
disk space will be allocated on LDEV 1 beyond the first 4 GB, assuming
that LDEV 1 is at least a 5 GB drive or larger.
3) if LDEV 1 is requested and there is not enough space above 4 GB
then the request fails (I *think*).
4) if MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET is specified and there is not enough
room on non LDEV-1 disks and there is not enough room above 4 GB
on LDEV 1 then space will be allocated below 4 GB (I *think*).
5) The OS uses a new value for the volname parameters to FOPEN and
HPFOPEN -- $SYSTEM_MASTER (I *think*). Specifying this new value causes
the disk space to be allocated in the first 4 GB of LDEV 1. The OS
uses this new value but I assume that no one else should.
6) The :FILE command also supports the new $SYSTEM_MASTER name, as in
DEV=**$system_master.
7) At update time disk space below 4 GB on LDEV 1 that can be moved
above 4 GB will be moved.
8) If $system_master is used in the FILE command or as a value passed
to FOPEN or HPFOPEN there will be backdating issues.
I apologize in advance if I have made errors above.
Enjoy,
Jeff Vance, CSY
